Heart diseases and especially the ischemic heart disease represent the main cause of death in the Czech Republic. Approximately 30,000 people die annually of the ischemic heart disease, of which more than 20 % are under 65 years. The ischemic heart disease is caused by the process of depositing cholesterol, calcium and other substances on the inner side of hear coronary arteries. An artery narrowed in this way restricts the normal blood flow and less blood and oxygen reaches the heart muscle. This state is sometimes accompanied by so called angina pain – stenocardy – pain under sternum. Complete blockage of the coronary artery leads to acute myocardial infarction and unless a timely treatment is initiated, the heart muscle stops working.
Department of Cardiology includes centres focused on heart arrhythmia, ischemic heart disease, heart defects and pacemaker controls.
